Last week I took a look at a possible Team Canada roster for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. Today I’ll take a look at a possible Team U.S.A. roster.

Let me know what you think, perhaps throw your own roster out there if you have the time.

Patrick Kane – Ryan Callahan – Zach Parise

Phil Kessel – Ryan Kesler – Bobby Ryan

Dustin Brown – Joe Pavelski – David Backes

Max Pacioretty – Paul Stastny – James Van Riemsdyk

Justin Abdelkader

In the mix: T.J. Oshie, Derek Stepan, Colin Wilson, Craig Smith, R.J. Umberger, Blake Wheeler and Nathan Gerbe

Pretty deep and solid forward lines but after the top 13 guys it drops off a bit.

Ryan Suter – Kevin Shattenkirk

Keith Yandle – Jack Johnson

Dustin Byfuglien – John Carlson

Ryan Mcdonagh

In the mix: Erik Johnson, Tim Gleason, Ryan Whitney, Nick Leddy, Matt Carle, Alex Gologski, and Keith Ballard

Solid group of D-men here, E. Johnson, Gleason or Keith Ballard could also easily step in.

Jonathan Quick

Ryan Miller

Cory Schneider

In the mix: Tim Thomas, Craig Anderson, and Jimmy Howard

If Craig Anderson keeps his stellar play up from this year through next year, you may see him jump right in there, possibly as the #1. Blue Jackets, you mad about the trade? I would be. If Tim Thomas plays next year and has a Vezina type season, he might make a push as well.

All in all, could the States take home the gold medal? Absolutely they could, they have all the tools to win in a short tournament and they’re really not weak anywhere. Are they as deep as Team Canada and as full of big names? No, but they definitely have the talent to win and beat any team out there.

Hat tip to again for the use of the photos.

Thanks for reading,

The Goaltending situation interests me. Many Canadians (myself not included) believe Canada has the best goaltending, but the fact guys like Craig Anderson and Jimmy Howard could be left off shows how strong they will be. I personally believe Anderson should be on the team over Schneider, as Anderson has proven himself to be a great goalie on not-so strong teams. No matter what, they will send some strong goalies to Sochi.

Thanks for the comment Steven and I see your point on Anderson over Schneider. Schneider had a good run last year and that is about it. I definitely did contemplate switching the 2 but ended up with Schneider based on him going to be strong for the rest of this year and being the #1 in Van next year. Again, just assumptions though.

I’m not really so sure about Schneider. If this was written last season, I’d agree but now…… not feeling it so much. Nick Leddy is coming into himself. Big Buf and Johnson, I like and I love the Kane, Callahan and Parise line :) I do agree that Team Canada has far more big names but we’ve got a few heavy hitters here :)

  • Anonymous

True, he hasn’t been great this year and looks similar to how Crawford did last season. That old sophomore season thing as the supposed #1 goalie….

I think Leddy has an outside shot at making this team especially if he keeps scoring as he is now. It’s still a year away so he has a lot of time to get even better. That Kane line is sick, eh? Imagine those 3 together for a tournament? Wow.

Heavy hitters on the US is right, scary team that can beat anyone. Thanks again for commenting, always appreciated and you always make great points :)

not sure where Umberger fits in the team? think Atkinson speed and fearless attitude would work better..he showed that in World’s this past summer

  • Anonymous

Not sure about Umberger no. Atkinson is good but he’s only played 3 games this year, is he hurt?

  • bleedinghockey

yes, he is day-to-day…if my memory serves me right, Johnson was injured/surgery the year or so before the olympics…same here for atkinson, he will be back soon and has a year to fine tune his skills…still believe he should be considered for the team, because he offers speed and a skill to know where teammates are on the ice.

  • Jim Lenning

Johnathan Quick and Tim Thomas in net USA ahould be the winner of the 2014 Olympics. Please don’t put Miller there.

  • Anonymous

Wow. You’re willing to bet on Tim Thomas as a safe bet after a year off? Interesting!

  • Timothy Frith

David Backes, Dustin Brown, Ryan Callahan, Patrick Kane, Ryan Kesler, Kyle Okposo, Max Pacioretty, Zach Parise, Joe Pavelski, Bobby Ryan, R.J. Umberger and James van Riemsdyk will be the forwards, Dustin Byfluglen, Matt Carle, John Carlson, Tom Gilbert, Tim Gleason, Jack Johnson, Brooks Orpik and Keith Yandle will be the defensemen and Ben Bishop, Jimmy Howard and Jonathan Quick will be the goaltenders.
